In an unprecedented move, National Artists Bienvenido Lumbera and Salvador Bernal collaborate on an exciting new musical based on Lope K. Santos’ groundbreaking novel about the breakup of the Filipino family and the rise of socialism in the country.

It is Maytime, 1906, in the pilgrimage town of Antipolo. In this rustic setting, a clash is about to unfold on a problem of urbanization. Don Ramon Miranda and Don Felimon, capitalist owners of El Progreso, a cigar factory in Manila, argue with Delfin, a progressive journalist who is also a suitor of Meni, Don Ramon’s daughter, about the labor problem in the factory. This clash of ideas becomes all too personal when Delfin, later supported by Felipe, Don Ramon’s ahijado (godson), defends the workers on their struggle for their rights.

This incident sparks a chain of complicated events – a daughter’s banishment and disinheritance, illicit affairs, a mysterious murder, ideological clashes – that reflect only too well the shifting forces in Philippine society.

But before the end of the night, he’ll probably end up sitting in a tree without his pants on.

A children’s musical based on a folk tale as retold by Rio Alma.

Do you ever wonder why the little crab (talangka) always hides under the sand, or why the mosquito persistently buzzes in your ear? This folk tale may have the answer, and what mighty lesson the answer contains! The folk tale as retold by national artist Virgilio Almario is adapted into a play produced by Tanghalang Pilipino. The play traces the source of chaos among the animals in Mount Arayat, which has to be resolved in the court of Mariang Sinukuan. The little crab instigates an act that appears like a prank that triggered the mosquito’s aggressive behavior. The mosquito, looking like a war freak vigilante, creates a chain reaction among the other animals. Misinterpretation aggravates the situation, while violence and mayhem ensue. The animals then see that whatever they do affects the others. In the end, Mariang Sinukuan teaches us a lesson about justice and accountability. Through music, fun and excitement, the play will show us that we must own up to the consequences of our actions.

Tanghalang Pilipino will be conducting auditions for its Actors’ Company on Saturday June 30, 2010, 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. Venue for the auditions is the CCP Bulwagang Amado Hernandez, Upper Basement, Tanghalang Pambansa, CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must have completed a two-year diploma or certificate course or earned a four-year college degree.
• Each one must submit a resume with two photos (a 2”x2” head shot and a 3”x5” full body shot) and be prepared to perform a three-minute monologue in Filipino from a published foreign or local play, any song in Filipino, and a short movement piece.
• Be ready to do an improvised scene.
• A compact disc player will be provided for those who may need it.

Those who will pass the initial audition will be called back on July 4, 2010. Successful applicants will be TP’s scholars for the year 2010-2011 and they will attend regular classes in acting, stage movement, voice, and script analysis. If they fit specific roles they will also be given the opportunity to participate in Tanghalang Pilipino’s Theater Season productions at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and other performances outside the CCP. Classeswill start on July 6, 2010.

With book and lyrics by National Artist for Literature Bien Lumbera, music by Lucien Letaba, production design by National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal, and under the direction of Jose Estrella, BANAAG AT SIKAT, Isang Rock Musical, is based on Lope K. Santos’ groundbreaking literary opus of the same title about the breakup of the Filipino family and the rise of socialism in the country. It universalizes its socialist theme by juxtaposing central, turn-of-the century Philippines (1911) with music that’s very much today, Indie Rock.

BANAAG AT SIKAT, Isang Rock Musical will open at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP-Little Theater) on August 6, 2010. This rock musical is a bold experimentation in its deployment of contemporary musical idioms as pop, folk, blues, jazz, bass rhythms, brass riffs, melodic anthems to the overriding rock genre while it fuses with some traditional Filipino-Spanish rhythms (danza and tiempo de balitao) in modern orchestrations.

We are looking for strong male and female actors who can sing and move, are 18 years old and above, and are comfortable with pop-rock, alternative rock and jazz rock musical genres.

• For the leads, we will need:
  Sopranos (not necessarily conservatory-trained)
  Tenors
  Baritones
• For the chorus, choir training is a plus.
• We also need mature male & female actor/singers who are – or can look like they are in their 50s – 60s.

Those interested to be part of the production are required to submit their resume together with 2 pictures (a head shot and a full-body photo) and:

MINDULANI SA MILENYO DOS

A Festival of New Mindanao Theatre Productions, A Congress of Mindanao Theatre Workers

A National Commission for Culture and the Arts-supported Theatre Festival was held in Cagayan de Oro City on November 22 to 25, 2008. A significant component of the event was the holding of a Conference on Theatreworks-cum-Congress of Theatre Practitioners.

Close to a hundred cultural workers, educators and theatre practitioners as well as members of the cultural community participated in the Thematic Theatre Congress. Three themes resonated throughout the Congress: Revisiting Mindanao Theatre; Re-framing / Re-valuating Mindanao Theatre; and Re-affirming Mindanao Theatre. This triad theme spurred a flurry of reflection, theory, re-invention and re-invigoration of theatre work. The new breed of young directors in Mindanao theatre sat and were heard—as the Panel of Reactors. In the same vein, the six full length productions and experimental theatre productions featured in the festival were highlighted as case studies of the papers being presented.

The overriding goal of the Congress is to firm-up the conditions for a “reinvigorated Mindanao Theatre that is vital for the sustained development of the island region. The discussion substantiated the irreversible role of Mindanao theatre not only as a mirror of society but also an engine of growth – serving as the expression and embodiment of our society’s identity and an affirmation of a vision for a fairer world and meaningful future.”

After the Congress the following conditions of outcomes were envisioned:

• Mindanao artists from all over the regions actively engaged in sustainable theatre work;
• The core-competencies of artists and cultural workers are raised through the Institutionalization of MINDULANI Network;
• More than 40 Theatre Organizations and programs operating in Mindanao are guided by a sharpened strategy and clearer aesthetic vision.
